Caldwell School District gender policy proposal : One mom's take
CALDWELL, Idaho (CBS2) — On Monday, the Caldwell school board meeting ended after things got heated during public comment.
During the meeting, the district proposed a policy that allows students to use bathrooms and locker rooms aligning with their preferred gender identity.
Hundreds showed up to the meeting. Brittany Gish and her daughter Gianna were among the many who showed up in opposition to the policy.
"For me, I can't comprehend how that's the solution to the problem," Gish said.
Gish said although she disagrees, she just wants her daughter to feel comfortable.
"I'm not against them having an option that works for them. What I don't agree with is for a biological male student to be in the same locker room undressing in front of my daughter," she said.
Her daughter, Gianna, said she feels the same.
"I don't really want it to happen because I talked with my friends, and they said that they didn't want it to happen either because it will make everyone who is trying to change in the locker room uncomfortable to have a boy there," Gianna said.
Gish said if the school goes forward with the policy, she would take her kids out of school.
"I would probably choose to homeschool my girls at that point," she said.
She hopes the school district can find another solution.
" I think it's really important that we put the children first, all of the children. Not just Cis gender children or children who identify opposite of their birth-assigned gender, but all children," Gish said. "For me, that means listening to their concerns. All of them, and protecting them because, as adults, that's our job."
CBS2 has reached out to each member of the Caldwell school board for comment but have yet to hear back.
The school board's next meeting is scheduled for February 13.
